Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), in the School of Health and Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service regarding human development and close relationships across the lifespan. Our objectives are to educate the next generation of HDFS professionals and scholars, to generate new knowledge, and to foster the well-being of individuals and families in their everyday lives.

As a premier HDFS department, we focus on the following areas: early care and education; child, youth, and family development; aging. Undergraduates can prepare for birth through kindergarten teacher licensure (as can our MEd graduate students) or focus on children’s and adolescents’ development in their diverse cultural, school, and family contexts. M.S. and doctoral students examine the biological, relational, early educational, social, and cultural foundations of development and their implications for families. The emphasis on “culture” includes not only different societies, but also within-society cultural groups, such as racial/ethnic and social class groups. We are committed to interdisciplinary study, diversity, and internationalization.

Position Summary

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) seeks applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor rank, Family Studies position to begin August 2018. We are particularly interested in a colleague whose research focuses on the study of family relationships and their intersection with two or more social positions (e.g., race, ethnicity, culture, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, immigration status).

The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the family studies core area, maintain an active research program, seek external funds to support research, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students from diverse racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, and support the graduate and undergraduate programs through departmental service. The position involves working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary department intentionally structured to prepare students and scholars to work effectively with diverse families and populations.

This is a 9-month full-time tenure-track position beginning August 1, 2018. Salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The HDFS Department within the School of Health and Human Sciences is ranked as one of the top HDFS graduate programs in the country. The department is committed to interdisciplinary study, diversity, and internationalization and has 27 full-time faculty, over 700 undergraduate majors, 150 undergraduate minors, and approximately 100 graduate students in MEd, MS, and PhD programs. Students of color make up over 50% of the student population in the department. The HDFS Department is committed to a faculty that is representative of the diverse community and student population served. M.S. and doctoral students in Family Studies examine the role of individual, biological, relational, social, and cultural factors in diverse family relationships and implications for family members. The emphasis in the department on racial, ethnic and cultural variation acknowledges the merit of both between and within-group approaches for understanding family and other close relationships.

UNC Greensboro is a doctoral research-intensive university and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), with approximately 20,000 students. The rich diversity of the Triad provides a wealth of opportunities to engage in research with families of color including immigrant and refugee populations. Support for research and grant activity with diverse families includes the university’s Center for New North Carolinians, the Child and Family Research Network, the Institute for Community and Economic Engagement, and the Center for Youth, Family and Community Partnerships. Additional research supports includes UNCG’s Office of Research and Engagement, the Office of Sponsored Programs, facilities for the integrated collection of observational and physiological data including a newly installed state of the art fMRI facility, and centrally managed statistical software available to all campus researchers for the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree (requirements completed by July 1, 2018) in the field of Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Psychology, or closely related field; evidence of competence in college instruction; a record of scholarly publications; and evidence of success or potential for success in securing external funding for research.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students of color representing diverse racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; Expertise in mixed method approaches for studying diverse families;
Experience in community-engaged research;
An interest in families and health/health disparities; Expertise in the study of dyadic and family relationships; Teaching and/or research experience that attends to the contexts in which family relationships are embedded; The potential to complement one or more of the departments’ additional core
research areas (i.e., sociocultural context, human development, or young children’s care and education).
